"This Companion explores the religious and cultural significance of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Known as the Jesuits, their members played an extremely important role as educators and priests in the era after the Reformation, and as missionaries in many parts of the world. This volume focuses principally on the period up to 1773 when Pope Clement XIV suppressed the order, but also gives attention to what the Jesuits have done since their restoration by Pope Pius VII in 1814."--BOOK JACKET.
